Quick Overview: IPTV on Android TV is easy because most good players are in the Google Play Store. You install a player such as TiviMate or OTT Navigator, add your IPTV login, and load the TV guide. This lesson covers Google TV streamers, NVIDIA Shield, Android TV boxes and smart TVs with Google TV built in, plus how to sideload a player that is not in the Play Store.

IPTV on Android TV and Google TV: install a player and add your playlist

Android TV (and its newer look, Google TV) runs on many devices: streaming boxes, NVIDIA Shield, and TVs from brands such as Sony, TCL and Hisense. Because it is Android, it runs the same players as a Fire TV Stick. In fact, setup is often simpler, since you can install them straight from Google Play.

What you need

  • An Android TV or Google TV device signed in to a Google account
  • Your IPTV login, ideally Xtream Codes details, for example from a free IPTV trial
  • About 10 minutes

Step 1: Choose an IPTV player for Android TV

Step 2: Install the IPTV app on Android TV from Google Play

  1. First, open Google Play (on Google TV, go to Apps and select Search for apps).
  2. Search for the player by name.
  3. Check the developer name, then select Install.
  4. Finally, select Open.

Step 3: Sideload a player that is not in Google Play (optional)

If your player is not listed, you can install it from the developer’s official website with the Downloader app, just like on Fire TV. Menu names vary by brand, but the steps are similar:

  1. Install Downloader by AFTVnews from Google Play.
  2. Unlock developer options: go to Settings → System → About and select Android TV OS build seven times.
  3. Allow Downloader to install apps, usually under Settings → Apps → Security & restrictions → Unknown sources.
  4. Then open Downloader, enter the player’s official download address, and install it.

Only use official addresses, such as the one in our OTT Navigator lesson. Avoid “modded” apps from unknown sites.

Step 4: Add your IPTV login

Open the player and choose how to log in. Xtream Codes (server, username and password) is the easiest, because the TV guide and the movie library load automatically. Otherwise, paste your M3U link. If you are unsure which one you have, read M3U vs Xtream Codes.

Four steps from a fresh device to live TV.

Step 5: Load the TV guide and tune playback

  • TV guide: with Xtream Codes it loads by itself; with M3U, add the EPG link (see How to Add EPG to IPTV).
  • Network: many Android TV boxes and the NVIDIA Shield have an Ethernet port; use it for live sports.
  • Frame rate: if motion looks jerky, turn on the device’s match-frame-rate or the player’s AFR option, if available.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Android TV better than a Fire TV Stick for IPTV?

Both run the same players. However, Android TV installs most of them from Google Play, and boxes like the NVIDIA Shield are faster. On the other hand, a Fire TV Stick is cheaper.

Does Google TV work the same way?

Yes. Google TV is Android TV with a different home screen, so the same apps and steps apply.

Do I need a VPN on Android TV?

It is optional. A VPN adds privacy and can help if your internet provider slows down streaming. Most major VPNs have Android TV apps in Google Play.

For official help with your device, see Google TV Help.
