Quick Overview: Downloader is a free app that lets you install apps on your Fire TV Stick that are not in the Amazon Appstore. In this lesson you install Downloader, unlock Developer Options and give Downloader permission to install apps. It takes about 5 minutes, and you only do it once.

How to install Downloader on Fire Stick in 4 steps

Almost every IPTV player and streaming tool for Fire TV is installed the same way: with Downloader. That is why we install Downloader on Fire Stick in the very first lesson of the setup track. Once Downloader is set up, every later lesson starts with “open Downloader and enter this address”.

Before you start: check that your Fire TV supports Downloader

Amazon now sells two kinds of Fire TV devices. Most run Fire OS, which supports Downloader. A few newer models run Vega OS, which does not allow apps from outside the Amazon Appstore. On those models Downloader does not appear in search and cannot be installed (see AFTVnews’ list of Vega OS models).

How to check in 20 seconds: go to Settings → My Fire TV → About and look at the software version. If it says Fire OS (version starting with 5, 6, 7, 8 or 14), you are good to go. If it only says OS and the version starts with 1, your device runs Vega OS and this guide will not work on it.

Fire OS devices support Downloader; Vega OS devices do not.

What you need

  • A Fire TV device running Fire OS (see the table above)
  • An internet connection
  • Your Fire TV remote
  • About 5 minutes

Step 1: Install Downloader from the Amazon Appstore

  1. Press the Home button on your remote.
  2. Go to Find (the magnifying glass) and select Search.
  3. Type Downloader and select it from the suggestions.
  4. Choose the app with the orange icon made by AFTVnews. Avoid look-alike apps from other developers.
  5. Select Get or Download and wait a few seconds for it to install.
  6. Select Open. If Downloader asks for access to files and media, select Allow, then close the welcome message.

Tip: you can also say “Alexa, search for Downloader” into the remote to skip the typing.

Step 2: Turn on Developer Options

On current Fire OS versions, Developer Options are hidden until you unlock them. You do this once.

  1. Go back to the Home screen and open Settings (the gear icon on the right).
  2. Select My Fire TV, then About.
  3. Highlight the first line, the name of your device (for example Fire TV Stick 4K Max).
  4. Press the Select (center) button on the remote 7 times quickly. You will see a countdown message, and then “No need, you are already a developer.”
  5. Press Back once. A new Developer Options entry now appears under My Fire TV.

If Developer Options was already visible on your device, skip this step.

Step 3: Allow Downloader to install apps

  1. Go to Settings → My Fire TV → Developer Options.
  2. Select Install unknown apps.
  3. Find Downloader in the list and switch it to ON.

Only Downloader gets permission; other apps stay blocked.

Fire OS gives this permission per app. Only Downloader can now install apps; every other app stays blocked. You do not need to turn on ADB debugging for Downloader, so leave it off unless another guide specifically asks for it.

Step 4: Use Downloader on Fire Stick to install an app

  1. Open Downloader from Your Apps & Channels.
  2. Select the address bar on the Home tab.
  3. Type the web address of the app you want, or its short Downloader code (a number). Newer versions show a number keypad for codes, which is faster with a remote.
  4. Select Go. Downloader downloads the file, usually an .apk.
  5. When the install screen appears, select Install, then Done.
  6. Back in Downloader, select Delete to remove the installer file. Fire TV Sticks have little storage, so this keeps your device fast.

New apps appear at the end of Your Apps & Channels. Hold the menu button (three lines) on an app and choose Move to put it on your Home screen.

Stay safe when installing apps

  • Only enter addresses and codes from sources you trust, such as the official website of the app.
  • Be careful with apps that ask for unusual permissions or show pop-ups and ads everywhere.
  • Keep Fire OS updated: Settings → My Fire TV → About → Check for updates.
  • Only use apps and services to watch content you have the right to watch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Downloader free?

Yes. Downloader is free in the Amazon Appstore. There is no subscription and no account to create.

Is Downloader legal and safe?

Downloader itself is a legal app listed in the official Amazon Appstore. It works like a simple browser and file downloader. Whether an app you install with it is safe and legal depends on that app, so stick to apps from trusted, official sources.

Does Downloader work on the Fire TV Stick 4K Select?

No. The Fire TV Stick 4K Select and the 2nd-generation Fire TV Stick HD run Vega OS, which only installs apps from the Amazon Appstore. If you want to install IPTV players and other apps, choose a Fire OS model such as the Fire TV Stick 4K Max or 4K Plus.

Do I need to turn on ADB debugging?

No. Downloader only needs the Install unknown apps permission. ADB debugging is only for connecting a computer to your Fire TV.

Should I turn the permission off afterwards?

You can. Switching Downloader back to OFF under Install unknown apps blocks new installs but does not remove the apps you already installed. Turn it back on the next time you need it.

What’s next

Downloader is ready. In the next lesson you use it to set up IPTV on your Fire TV Stick. New to IPTV? Start with IPTV Basics, or try a service first with a free IPTV trial.
